Population Growth
The nation's population age 65-plus grew nearly five times faster in than the total population between 1920 and 2020. In 1920, 1 in 20 people were 65-plus. In 2020 the ratio was 1 in 6.
Income
1 in 2 seniors living alone lack the income to pay for basic needs.
Seniors are living longer with less money. Those on a fixed income are especially vulnerable to increases in inflation and the cost of living.
Food Insecurity
In 2022 over 8% of seniors, numbering nearly 7 million, were food insecure. With that number going up to over 11% for those seniors who are disabled and 34% for people who are disabled and unable to work.
Malnutrition
Older Adults are already at a higher risk of malnutrition due to decreased appetite, mobility issues, prescription medications, and more.
